Time-Restricted Eating Without Calorie Counting for Weight Loss in a Racially Diverse Population. A Randomized Controlled Trial and Time-Restricted Eating for Treatment of Obesity? The Devil Is in the (Counseling) Details

(from the August 2023 Annals for Educators)

Time-restricted eating without calorie counting has become a popular weight loss strategy, but long-term randomized trials evaluating its efficacy are limited. This randomized clinical trial examined the effect on weight loss at 12 months of an 8-hour time-restricted eating strategy (without caloric restriction) versus a strategy focused on reducing calories. The accompanying editorial discusses the findings, the important role of counseling in any weight loss intervention, and evidence gaps in what we know about the effectiveness of time-restricted eating.

Annals for Educators is a Web Exclusives feature of Annals of Internal Medicine which includes activities using selected Annals articles to help medical educators in their teaching activities.

Subspecialty and Combined Training Careers

Nephrology

Nephrology is the subspecialty of internal medicine that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the kidney. Because the kidney performs so many critical functions, nephrologists maintain expertise in primary kidney disorders, but also the management of the systemic consequences of kidney dysfunction.

See what makes internal medicine unique and all the career pathways open to internal medicine physicians.Be sure to also explore a day in the life of an IM specialist/subspecialist.

In the Clinic

Atrial Fibrillation

Evidence for diagnosis and treatment of atrial fibrillation has expanded substantially since 2017, when In the Clinic last considered this subject. Direct oral anticoagulants have become the predominant therapy for thromboembolic disease, and antidotes for these drugs are now available.

In the Clinic is a feature of Annals of Internal Medicine which includes practical reviews about the management of common clinical conditions.
