Reflections on Leadership Day 2019

In May, over 400 ACP members gathered in Washington, D.C., to advocate on behalf of physicians and patients from all over the country. The two-day event featured opportunities to learn about ACP's public policy priorities and engage with congressional lawmakers by sharing personal experiences.

I.M. Internal Medicine

Spotlight: Nagendra Gupta, MD, FACP

When Dr. Nagendra Gupta was a child, he was a fast talker. He says he could speak so fast he thought his fast-talking skills could land him a job in the world of TV news. “I used to think that because I could speak really fast, I could probably be the best newsreader.”

Discovering Your Brand: Advocacy Beyond ACP Leadership Day on Capitol Hill

A pit in my stomach was slowly forming as I sat through the Leadership Day workshops before marching on Capitol Hill with ACP. Analyzing Annals

Preventing Firearm-Related Death and Injury

Deaths and injuries from firearms are significant public health problems, and clinicians are in a unique position to identify risk among their patients and discuss the importance of safe firearm practices.

Annals of Internal Medicine is the premier internal medicine academic journal published by the American College of Physicians (ACP). It is one of the most widely cited and influential specialty journals in the world.

Implementation of a Medical Student-Led Emergency Absentee Ballot Voting Initiative at an Urban Tertiary Care University Hospital

Medical and allied health professionals are in a unique position to advocate for vulnerable patients. Students at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital (TJUH) launched an emergency absentee ballot voting initiative for the 2018 election, affording hospitalized patients (and their family members/support persons) the opportunity to vote despite acute hospitalization.

Subspecialty Careers

Cardiovascular Disease

Cardiovascular disease (typically referred to as “cardiology”) focuses on prevention, diagnosis, and management of disorders of the cardiovascular system. Management of risk factors for cardiovascular disease prevention, and early diagnosis and intervention for established disease are important elements of cardiology.

In the Clinic

Hypertension

High blood pressure (BP) is the leading risk factor for morbidity and mortality around the globe. Approximately 1 billion persons worldwide have a systolic BP above 140 mm Hg, and 3.5 billion have a BP above the ideal level of 115/75 mm Hg.
