Primary Care Takes on Opioid Addiction

From the October 2017 ACP Internist

Opioid use disorder kills hundreds of Americans each week, despite the availability of treatments that can cut mortality risk by more than half. With some education and empathy, however, internists can intervene to change this dynamic, according to experts.

ACP Internist provides news and information for internists about the practice of medicine and reports on the policies, products, and activities of ACP.

Hemorrhagic Conversion After Treatment of Deep-Vein Thrombosis in a Patient with Subacute Ischemic Stroke

Deep-vein thrombosis (DVT) is an overlooked complication in patients with ischemic stroke and can be found in up to 80% of patients who did not receive prophylactic anticoagulation. Bleeding is the primary adverse effect of any anticoagulant therapy and although the risk of major bleeding is usually less than 3%, hemorrhagic conversion remains a real concern in these patients.

Reflections on ACP's Abstract Competition

2015 Medical Student Abstract Competition winner Jules Vieaux, MD

Each year at Internal Medicine Meeting, ACP announces and honors the winners for its annual National Abstract Competition. Jules Vieaux, MD, a winner in 2015, offered his thoughts on the competition and how it's positively impacted his career in internal medicine. Vieaux's winning abstract entry's topic was “Quality Improvement for Advance Care Planning Completion Rates in a Community Clinic.”

ACP Abstract Competition

ACP's National Abstracts Competition will be held at Internal Medicine 2018. The meeting will take place April 19 - 21, 2018, in New Orleans, Louisiana. Abstracts are divided into five categories: Basic Research, Clinical Research, Quality Improvement-Patient Safety, High Value Care and Clinical Vignette. ACP Medical Student Members are encouraged to submit. A first author may submit two abstracts to the Clinical Vignette category, and one abstract to each of the Research categories. The submission deadline for all student abstract submissions is Wednesday, November 15, 2017 at 11:59 PM EST.

Medical Student Perspective

Leaving a Fingerprint in Medical School Through Teaching

It is 6 a.m. and the high-speed car race commences. I arrive at the university hospital, put on my white coat, and, depending on the rotation, visit my patients, do rounds with my preceptors, write progress notes, follow up labs, attend lectures, or study for exams. After 12 hours or so, I call it a day.

My Kind of Medicine: Real Lives of Practicing Internists

Rebecca Kruisselbrink, MD

Dr. Rebecca Kruisselbrink called a 150-acre farm in Tara, Ontario, home and personally identifies with the shortage of physicians that plagues rural regions. “I grew up on a farm in a village with one stop light, and the nearest center with a small hospital was a 20-minute drive.”

Advocacy Update

As ACA Repeal Fails, ACP Vows to Keep the Pressure On

From the October 6, 2017 ACP Advocate

Health care advocates breathed a collective sigh of relief in late September when Congress again failed to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act. But the American College of Physicians does not intend to savor the victory for long.

The ACP Advocate is a bi-weekly e-newsletter that provides ACP members with news about public policy issues affecting internal medicine and patient care.

Patterns of Sedentary Behavior and Mortality in U.S. Middle-Aged and Older Adults: A National Cohort Study

Although total sedentary time has been associated with increased mortality, most studies have relied on participant recall to report activity. Whether longer or shorter bouts of inactivity are associated with different outcomes is not known. This large cohort study objectively measured physical activity to assess total as well as shorter and longer bouts of sedentary time.
