Taiwan Society of Internal Medicine Annual Meeting

December 1-3, 2023
Taipei, Taiwan
ACP Global Ambassador reflections by: Eileen Barrett, MD, MPH, MACP, SFHM, Chair, Board of Regents

It was an honor to serve as an ACP Ambassador at the Taiwan Society of Internal Medicine (TSIM) in early December 2023. The TSIM has approximately 10,000 members, of whom approximately 8,000 attended their annual meeting. Dr. Shan-Chwen Chang is the TSIM President, and it was a privilege to meet him and the leadership and members of the TSIM. I presented an update on ACP and the Annals of Internal Medicine at the National Taiwan University Hospital, then heard a presentation from Dr. Tzung-Dau Wang and met with his department’s hospitalists where we discussed point of care ultrasound, quality improvement, length of stay, and more. I also learned about the National Taiwan University Hospital’s extensive International Medical Service program. As part of the TSIM Annual Meeting Gala Dinner, it was a true privilege to present on behalf of ACP a trophy to Dr. Chang as TSIM President, and to express my admiration for his leadership and service particularly in the early phases of the COVID pandemic. During the educational content of the meeting, I presented on Physician Well-being in a Time of Crisis immediately after hearing from Dr. John Kolbe (President of the International Society of Internal Medicine). Like physicians worldwide, many Taiwanese physicians are facing increasing workloads and burnout, while also working in systems with financial pressures. During the meeting, however, attendees were engaged and sessions were very well attended with robust question and answer sessions. There were also excellent resident posters.
