Advocacy Update: ACP takes part in "Moving from Crisis to Action: A Public Health Approach to Reducing Gun Violence"

ACP President Wayne Riley, MD, MACP, represented ACP in Charleston, SC, at commemoration of the six month anniversary of the shootings at the Emanuel A.M.E. Church. "Moving from Crisis to Action: A Public Health Approach to Reducing Gun Violence," included representatives from national and local medical, legal, and law enforcement officials who discussed the impact of gun violence on citizens, communities and the economy.

Dr. Riley's remarks focused on the recommendations from the College and the American Bar Association published in the policy paper Firearm-Related Injury and Death in the United States: A Call to Action from 8 Health Professional Organizations and the American Bar Association, published on April 7, 2015. A total of 52 organizations have endorsed the paper and its call to action.

An op-ed, "Firearms violence in America: Long past the time for action" co-authored by Dr. Riley and Paulette Brown, President of the American Bar Association, was published in The Post & Courier, a Charleston-based newspaper. The op-ed was written in advance of the most recent tragic shootings in San Bernadino, CA. ACP offers condolences to the victims and their families.

"From Doctors and Lawyers: A Plea for Action on Guns," a joint letter to the editor from the presidents of ACP and the American Bar Association, was also published on December 8, 2015.
