Medical Student Perspective Essay

Hyponatremic Lessons From the Floors

That night, I resolved to write this piece as a way to remind myself to never get used to the routine, to stay conscious of the need to outwardly project respect for my patients, and to ensure people around me don't have to conform for fear of retribution. I forged an anchor in this memory, and I have nailed it to my conscience.

Advocacy Update

Member of ACP Council of Resident/Fellow Members Testifies at Hearing on the Future of the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program

The American College of Physicians is using the power of advocacy to protect the federal student loan system and Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program. The PSLF program allows student loans to be forgiven if recipients make 10 years of minimum payments and spend 10 years working in public service. Dr. Linh Tang Taylor, a second-year internal medicine resident, traveled to Washington, D.C., in late April to testify on behalf of ACP at a Department of Education hearing regarding new regulations that could negatively affect the program and its recipients.

ACP also advocated to the House Committee on Education and Workforce to oppose limitations and restrictions on federal student loans and loan repayments because of the detrimental effect it would have on the physician workforce.

Stay up to date with ACP’s federal student loan resource.

Erdheim-Chester's Disease in a Geriatric Female Developing Aortitis and Cardiac Tamponade

Erdheim-Chester's disease (ECD) is a rare, non-Langerhans histiocytosis (NLH). Classified as a myeloid neoplasm, ECD has limited data as there have been fewer than a thousand reported cases in the past 100 years. Symptoms typically include malaise and bone pain, but patients can present with a myriad of other symptoms from systemic involvement of inflammation, including the pituitary gland, brain stem, cerebellar, skin, lungs, and retroperitoneal tissue (1).
