Residency programs that combine basic internal medicine training with other disciplines are also available. These combined programs almost always allow completion of training and eligibility for board certification in both areas in a time frame shorter than would be required if training were to be pursued in both fields independently.
Combined training in internal medicine and another discipline is of particular interest to those who wish to be able to provide specialized care but with a broader perspective and skill set than may be obtained through training in only one area.
Basic internal medicine training combined with the following disciplines is available:
- Anesthesiology
- Dermatology
- Emergency Medicine
- Emergency Medicine/Critical Care
- Family Medicine
- Medical Genetics and Genomics
- Neurology
- Nuclear Medicine
- Pediatrics
- Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
- Preventive Medicine
- Psychiatry
Additional information regarding specific combined training programs may be obtained through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) website.
The largest number of combined training programs is in internal medicine and pediatrics.
