Implicit Bias, Microaggressions, and the Health of Pan-Asian Physicians and Trainees
Panelists: Tiffany I. Leung, MD, MPH, FACP; Joshua M. Liao, MD, MS, FACP; Tammy L. Lin, MD, FACP
Moderators: Elisa I. Choi, MD, FACP; George Abraham, MD, MPH, FACP
This 1-hour webinar explores the impact of implicit bias and microaggressions on the health of Pan-Asian physicians and trainees. Anti-Asian discrimination and assaults increased significantly during the COVID-19 pandemic, contributing to a “secondary contagion” of racism. These factors exacerbated preexisting unique challenges and barriers that Pan-Asian physicians and trainees already faced in work and learning environments, such as the “bamboo ceiling.” The “model minority” myth and “perceived foreignness” at the front line of usual and pandemic-related care are particularly damaging to the Pan-Asian workforce.
