Governor's Message
As we witness how a chilly and unruly Winter is almost gone and as we welcome Spring and warm weather with excitement, we must look forward with positive thoughts and desire to continue thriving and being strong stewards of civility and social responsibility.
Lots have happened in the United States in the past month and a half. There has been a vertiginous series of dramatic changes and exposure to entirely different shifts in direction in many domains, creating a profound sense of uncertainty. Although we can't change external things beyond our control, we can change how we react to them.
Physicians are at a very strategic vantage point in society—we must be stewards of the structures that help our society be healthy, improve wellness, and avoid epidemiologic disasters. Education, sharing of best practices, and maintaining a continuous thirst for knowledge are paramount to remaining essential tools for our value proposition. We must continue to have a critical mindset to identify and explore questions that arise daily in our quotidian practice of medicine.
Our voices must rise with a robust yet civil and respectful tone to support our children, the elderly, and the frail. Public health initiatives must be maintained and recommended to preserve good health and development and prevent diseases. Nonetheless, a respectful conversation in a non-adversarial tone is fundamental. Maintaining the loftiest level of education and appraisal of evidence has always been the characteristic of a responsible physician and should remain the same. These times should not change our approaches, yet we must be strategic to confront unimaginable challenges – such as the disappearance of web-based real-time evidence and information resources. We need to be a team. Medical societies should be stewards to preserve the evidence – make sure that physicians and allied clinicians have access to the most current guidelines and resources that help us practice standardized recommendations for specific conditions. This is humbling – it was just unimaginable to think that the website you would contact for information would ever be removed. Patient care will be impacted negatively if clinicians lose access to relevant information that can guide point-of-care management. Therefore, remaining good-standing members of our medical societies that allow us access to our regular journals and information will be paramount.
Our voices should also be amplified as a whole team; medical societies must partner to share, respectfully and objectively, the evidence and scientific-based facts that govern our medical decision-making and recommendations. Today, more than ever, it is not physicians who face a threat. The patient population is vulnerable and exposed to the lack of access to evidence-based recommendations and science. We need to care for them and be ultimate advocates for them. Physicians must safeguard unbiased, evidence-based, and critically appraised information and remain thought leaders in science and healthcare. The society needs us as a united front now more than ever.
Our ACP Ohio chapter is committed to providing evidence-based, carefully curated, and bias-free medical education through its longitudinal monthly webinar programming and annual meeting, which this year will be held on November 6 and 7 at the Columbus Hilton Hotel, a brand new, world-class facility.
Let's keep our spirits up, look forward to Spring's enhanced wellness experience, and see each other in New Orleans at the Annual ACP Conference in April.
With gratitude and respect,
Moises Auron, MD
Governor, ACP Ohio
