April is always a busy time for our chapter and national ACP. The first weekend in April, our chapter held the annual George Ackerman Reading Retreat at the Red Apple Inn in Heber Springs, ably led by Dr. Eric DelGiacco. This unique event combines Medicine and the Arts with insightful discussions of Film and Literature led by experts in the field. This year's program featured Dr. Ples Spradley discussing new portable biomedical technologies as well as discussions of the books, The Intuitionist by Colton Whitehead and Sing, Unburied, Sing by Jesmyn Ward led by professors of English from UCA and University of the Ozarks. Dr. DelGiacco led discussion of the book How Not to Study a Disease: The Story of Alzheimer's. The attendees also viewed the movie Little Miss Sunshine with discussion led by Professor Kendrick Prewitt from the University of West Alabama. We were excited to see new attendees this year from among our resident and student members and early career physicians.
We learned during this month that our Chapter was awarded an I Raise the Rates grant to help practices improve vaccination rates among patients. The grant sponsored representatives from the selected practices to attend a Quality Improvement training pre-course at the national meeting.
The ACP national meeting, IM2024, took place in Boston with excellent representation by our Chapter. The meeting was opened by Arkansas's own, Dr. Omar Atiq, the 2023-24 President of the American College of Physicians, culminating his year of leadership for the organization. Dr. Bob Hopkins presented a timely and insightful update on vaccinations. Drs. Asis Shrestha participated in Convocation honoring those members elected to Fellowship in the College. This past year, our Chapter had 8 members advance to Fellowship. Dr. Atiq was also recognized as a Master of the ACP (MACP). Residents from UAMS Little Rock, UAMS Northwest, and Mercy Fort Smith presented posters at the meeting. Our chapter's Doctor's Dilemma team of Bhavesh Mohan Lal, Gomathy Nageshwaran, and Nikhila Ghanta competed admirably against stiff competition from around the world. Dr. Ples Spradley beat out over 400 Internal Medicine Physicians to correctly identify a challenging case of Leishmaniasis during the ever-popular "Thieves Market" session.
During the meeting, our Chapter was recognized with the Gold Excellence Award for Chapter management by the organization. One of my favorite highlights was our Chapter reception held in conjunction with the Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama chapters with great attendance from trainees and practicing physicians from across the state. It was certainly a busy week, but a wonderful opportunity to learn, grow, and connect with our colleagues from across the state and around the world. With it never being too early to plan ahead, I encourage all of you to mark your calendars for next April to attend the Reading Retreat as well as the National Meeting in New Orleans.

Urge HHS To Provide Additional Relief Following Change Healthcare Cyberattack – ACTION
ACP is asking members to urge the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to take additional steps to help physicians following the cyberattack on Change Healthcare by addressing cash flow disruptions, improving communications, and maintaining alternative claims submission processes. Physicians impacted by the cyberattack are encouraged to make their voices heard. A sample letter that can be personalized and submitted electronically has been provided for your convenience.
