Governor's Message
If you're like me, you might be wondering where the summer went. It feels like yesterday I was writing the spring newsletter with the building excitement of the first in person annual meeting in two years. Those that participated in the meeting enjoyed a fantastic educational session and the palpable joy of being in community with other colleagues from across the country. As you'll see below, the chapter celebrated the induction of several new Fellows and supported our residents to an impressive finish in Doctor's Dilemma during our time in Chicago.
The rest of this edition of the newsletter is a mix of look backs on a summer full of other ACP activities and a look ahead to several exciting opportunities to learn, collaborate, and advocate with colleagues from across the state. Keep reading to learn more and to find out details about registering for these can't miss events. I hope to see many of you over the upcoming months and as always feel free to reach out if you have questions about the chapter or other ACP activities.

Internal Medicine Meeting
This year the ACP Internal Medicine Meeting (IMM) was held in person on April 28-30, 2022, in Chicago, IL. From scientific sessions to abstract competitions to Convocation, ACP's Internal Medicine Meeting was an engaging event and was attended by thousands of physicians this year.
Nebraska ACP past governor, Marvin Bittner MD, FACP, was a speaker at the IMM. He spoke on Volunteerism Opportunities for Late-Career Physicians. Thank you, Dr. Bittner for always making Nebraska ACP proud!
Congratulations to UNMC team of Drs. Amy Dreessen, James Fagerland, Brett Begley, and Clayton Oakley who participated at the 2022 IMM Doctor's Dilemma competition. A total of 47 teams competed and the UNMC team made it to the semifinal round, finishing in 6th place. Great job!
Also, congratulations to our own Emily Jezewski, UNMC medical student, for being elected to serve a one-year term on the American College of Physicians Council of Student Members (CSM). Her term began at the ACP IMM 2022 in Chicago and will end at the conclusion of ACP IMM 2023. We are so proud of you Emily!
The Internal Medicine Meeting next year will be held in San Diego, CA on April 27-29, 2023.
Health and Public Policy Committee
Leadership Day 2022 is in the books! The event enables the College to increase its presence on Capitol Hill and raises our concern with U.S. lawmakers. ACP members receive two days of in-depth briefings on the College's legislative priorities and an opportunity to meet with elected officials.
Our Nebraska ACP Governor's Advisory Council Student Member Kishan Srikanth, CUMC, attended Leadership Day. He detailed his experience here:
ACP Leadership Day, May 17-18, 2022, was a 2-day conference held in Washington, DC where Nebraska Chapter ACP delegates were able to speak with Nebraska legislative leaders and their aids about medical policy issues of particular interest to the ACP.
Nebraska ACP was well represented with 3 medical students Kishan Srikanth and Arjun Vadlamudi, CUMC and Emily Jezewski, UNMC as well 3 physicians, Dr. Beachy, Dr. DeVrieze, and Dr. Bittner.
The conference kickstarted with an all-day workshop educating students on what medical advocacy is and how to be an effective orator when speaking with representatives. We were then instructed on what the American College of Physicians does every year on Capitol Hill and why medical advocacy is so important to the mission of the ACP. Towards the end of day one, we had two incredible panel discussions on primary care equity payments and the latest from congress on mental health, telehealth, and prescription drugs. As a medical student, I had an incredible day of learning about how policy can influence the way I would be administering health care to patients in the future. The day ended with a fun happy hour social where we got to socialize with medical students from various other ACP chapters across the nation.
Our second day began with inspiring talks from Representatives Ami Bera from California and John Joyce from Philadelphia. Both were physicians in training and spoke powerfully about they transitioned their career from medicine to policy. They spoke of the importance of Leadership Day and how we can really make a difference. We then proceeded with our Capitol Hill meetings. We were fortunate enough to meet with the office of Representatives Don Bacon and Adrian Smith and Senators Deb Fischer and Ben Sasse. The topics we discussed included expanding access to mental health resources, providing funding for establishing proper infrastructure for telehealth services, and increasing residency spots to reduce the rate of those going unmatched. The conversations were productive, thought provoking, and informative. We came away from these meetings encouraged that the information we provided would be useful in shaping how current and future policy decisions would positively impact our patients.
I am extremely thankful for this incredible learning opportunity provided by the ACP. I learned a lot about medical advocacy and am even more inspired about advocating for my future patients. I believe my experience at Leadership Day will be extremely useful in my future endeavors and I hope to represent the Nebraska ACP chapter again in subsequent Leadership Days.
Sincerely,
Kishan Srikanth, Creighton University Medical Student

Congratulations to the Nebraska Chapter's newest Fellows. Fellowship in the College is an honor. Being an FACP® is a distinction earned from colleagues that recognize your accomplishments and achievements over and above the practice of medicine. The most important considerations for ACP Fellowship are excellence and contributions made to both medicine and to the broader community in which the internist lives and practices.
