ACP congratulates Sandra A. Fryhofer, MD, MACP on her re-election to the AMA Board of Trustees, as announced by The American Medical Association (AMA) on June 15, 2022. Dr. Fryhofer is a board-certified internal medicine physician from Atlanta and will serve as Board Chair from 2022-2023.
She was first elected to the AMA Board of Trustees in 2018. Dr. Fryhofer is the longtime AMA liaison to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), and she is an appointee to the ACIP Work Group on COVID-19 Vaccines.
Dr. Fryhofer was president of the ACP from 2000-2001, where she was the second woman to be elected president and the youngest president in the organization's 85-year history. During her tenure on ACP's Board of Regents, she chaired the ACP Committee on Women's Health.
ACP also congratulates Suja Mathew, MD, FACP, on her election to the AMA Council on Medical Education
Dr. Mathew has spent much of her career in medical education. A graduate of the Pritzker School of Medicine, she completed her internal medicine residency at the University of Chicago Hospitals. Dr. Mathew has held many positions in education leadership including an internal medicine residency program, directing clinical education, and serving as associate professor. At Cook County Health System, she served as course director for the pathophysiology course for all second-year medical students at Rush Medical College, program director of the Stroger Hospital of Cook County internal medicine residency program, and chair of medicine. As chair, she oversaw internal medicine, dermatology and neurology service delivery, as well as the training of hundreds of residents, fellows and medical students.
She currently serves as chief clinical officer for Atlantic Health System, where she oversees all medical student programs, nine residencies, and six fellowships.
Dr. Mathew is currently a member of ACP's Board of Regents, the policy-making body of ACP, and chairs the College's Health and Public Policy Committee.
