- Recognize indications for behavioral and mind-body therapies to alleviate pain.
- Counsel patients about the indications and limitations of pain management approaches that have a less robust evidence base but are frequently used by patients.
- Identify the role of local injection or dry needling for patients with refractory pain.
- Engage patients in productive and evidence-based risk-benefit discussions regarding incorporation of complementary and alternative medicine into a personalized, conventional pain management plan.
- Partner with patients to select treatment modalities for a multimodal approach that is best suited to their pain type, functional goals, and self-management plan.
