Promoting Mental Health Awareness & ACP Internal Medicine Meeting 2025 Recap
“I love helping my peers. The best is when a light bulb goes off in their head and they see for themselves the power of what's within them. It … it's the greatest gift.”
—Julia Andrieni, MD, MACP, ACP Physician Peer Coach
Many times, it is easier to see bright spots in others than it is to recognize our own strong points and ways that we shine. May is Mental Health Awareness Month. In 1949, Mental Health America launched Mental Health Week (which eventually became Mental Health Month) with the Jaycees to educate Americans about mental illness and mental health. Mental Health America supports individuals with the lived experience of mental health struggles through education, advocacy, and screening. Improving mental health cannot be done alone—it happens within a community of care and through intentional efforts to help others see the light in themselves. At last month's Internal Medicine Meeting in New Orleans, LA, we saw countless examples of physicians coming together to learn, connect, and support one another. Let us take a few moments this May to pause, reflect on our own mental health, and take some time to discover the power we have when we connect with each other, especially as we continue the challenge to live and thrive through our current ‘interesting times.’
