Mastership (MACP®)
ACP Bylaws state that Masters shall be Fellows who have been selected because of “integrity, positions of honor, impact in practice or in medical research, or other attainments in science or in the art of medicine.” Masters must be highly accomplished persons demonstrating impact in practice, leadership, or in medical research. Evidence of their achievements can come from many types of endeavors, such as renown within their field and/or ACP chapter, research, education, health care initiatives, volunteerism, administrative positions, care of patients, and service to their community.
ACP Award for a Distinguished Contribution by ACP National or Chapter Staff
This award is bestowed to a former or retired national or chapter staff member of the American College of Physicians for distinguished contributions to ACP.
ACP Award for Distinguished Contributions to Behavioral Medicine
This award is bestowed for distinguished contributions to the integration of behavioral medicine with traditional medicine. This award recognizes an individual who has furthered the care of patients by recognizing the importance of caring for the whole patient, both mind and body. This can be through research or clinical innovations.
ACP Award for Outstanding Contributions to Improving Well-being and Professional Fulfillment in Internal Medicine
This award is bestowed upon an ACP member for distinguished contributions to improving well-being and professional fulfillment in medicine. This award recognizes an individual who has helped the profession of medicine through improving the practice and/or training environments, advocating for systems changes, fostering communities of well-being, and assisting others in addressing their personal well-being. The awardee has had a systemic impact on their organization(s) that can be sustained long term.
ACP Inspirational Global Member Awards
These awards recognize ACP Global Members, one in each of two categories annually. An early career Internal Medicine physician (A physician within 16 years of graduation from medical school and who is not a medical student or resident/fellow member of ACP) and an established physician (> 16 years from medical school).
Alfred Stengel Memorial Award for Outstanding Service to the American College of Physicians
This award is bestowed for outstanding service to the American College of Physicians.
Alvan R. Feinstein Memorial Award
The award is to be given to an American physician who has made a major contribution to the science of patient care in activities that Dr. Feinstein has broadly defined as clinical epidemiology or clinimetrics, involving the direct study of patients’ clinical conditions. This award is given every other year.
Edward R. Loveland Memorial Award for a Distinguished Contribution in the Health Field
This award is bestowed upon a layperson or lay organization for a distinguished contribution advancing the health care of adults, including health care equity and justice.
Elizabeth and Emily Blackwell Award for Outstanding Contributions to Advancing the Careers of Women in Medicine
This award is bestowed upon an ACP member for distinguished contributions to advancing the careers of women in medicine. This award recognizes an individual who has furthered the careers of women medical students, residents, and/or physicians through mentoring and leadership development.
Faith T. Fitzgerald Award for Outstanding Educator of Residents and Fellows
The award recognizes an ACP member who is a distinguished faculty member who spends a significant amount of time teaching residents and fellows.
Harriet P. Dustan Award for Science as Related to Medicine
This award is bestowed for outstanding work in science as related to internal medicine.
Herbert S. Waxman Award for Outstanding Medical Student Educator
The award recognizes an ACP member who is an internal medicine interest group leader, clinical clerkship director, program director, or faculty member (no higher than the level of an associate professor of medicine) who spends a significant amount of time teaching medical students.
James D. Bruce Memorial Award for Distinguished Contributions in Preventive Medicine
This award is bestowed for distinguished contributions in preventive medicine. Preventive medicine shall be interpreted to include any subject bearing on the prevention of disease.
Jane F. Desforges Distinguished Teacher Award
The award is bestowed upon a Fellow or Master of the College who has demonstrated the ennobling qualities of a great teacher as judged by the accomplishments of former students. These students should have been inspired by the nominee and achieved positions of influence in the field of medical education, primarily as teachers. If the awardee has not previously been elected to Mastership, it will be awarded when elected.
John Phillips Memorial Award for Outstanding Work in Clinical Medicine
This award is bestowed for outstanding, lifetime work in clinical medicine which has been innovative and/or had a regional or national impact.
Joseph E. Johnson Leadership Award
The award recognizes a Resident/Fellow member of the College who has demonstrated qualities that exemplify the College’s mission “to enhance the quality and effectiveness of health care by fostering excellence and professionalism in the practice of medicine.”
Joseph F. Boyle Award for Distinguished Public Service
The award is bestowed upon a current or former government official or a physician acting in an official capacity (city, county, state or federal, executive, or legislative) who has provided outstanding public service toward improving the delivery of health care.
Nicholas E. Davies Memorial Scholar Award for Scholarly Activities in the Humanities and History of Medicine
The award is given for outstanding scholarly activities in history, literature, philosophy, and ethics and contributions to humanism in medicine.
Oscar E. Edwards Memorial Award for Volunteerism and Community Service
The award is bestowed upon an ACP Medical Student Member, Resident/Fellow Member, Member, Fellow, or Master who has initiated or been involved in volunteer programs, or has provided post training volunteer service. The service must have been completely voluntary and not for completion of training or position requirements. Volunteer work must have been done as a physician or medical trainee and be medically related.
Outstanding Volunteer Clinical Teacher Award of the American College of Physicians
The award is bestowed upon a Member, Fellow, or Master of the College who has consistently volunteered their services to teach medical students, residents, or other trainees outside of their academic responsibilities.
Ralph O. Claypoole Sr. Memorial Award for Devotion of a Career in Internal Medicine to the Care of Patients
The award is bestowed upon a FACP or MACP who is an outstanding practitioner of internal medicine whose career has been devoted to the care of patients. The practitioner must be a clinician who is highly respected by peers and colleagues for clinical skills and who has been a role model. If the awardee has not previously been elected to MACP, it will be awarded when elected.
Richard Neubauer Advocate for Internal Medicine Award
The annual Richard Neubauer Advocate for Internal Medicine Award recognizes the Advocate member who has made exceptional contributions to advance the College's public policy agenda.
Samuel Eichold II Memorial Award for Contributions in Diabetes
The award is given to a member of the American College of Physicians or to an organization that has made important health care delivery innovations for diabetic patients resulting in improved clinical or economic outcomes; or a member of the ACP who has conducted research that significantly improves quality of care or clinical management of diabetes.
Steven E. Weinberger Award for Physician Executives/Leaders
This award is bestowed upon a physician executive or leader of a national or international medical organization for distinguished contributions to internal medicine or significant impact on improving health care and/or medical education beyond a single institution or health system. The physician executive/leader should be an employee not serving in an elected position. Nominations of women and underrepresented or marginalized groups are encouraged.
Walter J. McDonald Award for Early Career Physicians
The award recognizes outstanding achievement by a physician member who is within 16 years of graduating medical school and who is not an ACP Medical Student Member or Resident/Fellow Member.
W. Lester Henry Award for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
The award is given to an ACP member with outstanding accomplishments in advancing diversity, inclusion, and equity in the health care workforce, and/or improving health equity for people with historically marginalized group identities.
