Governor's Message

Greetings!

As I put together this newsletter, the snow is piling up outside. I hope everyone is enjoying the Vermont Winter!

In light of recent events in the federal government, I'd like to draw your attention to some of the recent ACP actions and statements. A summary of recent actions can be found here. While the article focuses on several areas, I want to highlight the statements about Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

From ACP President Dr. Isaac O. Opole: “ACP strongly opposes discrimination in any form, particularly in the medical setting, given the clearly demonstrated negative impacts on patient health and well-being. The disparities experienced by individuals in our society related to their race, veteran status, ethnicity, sexual orientation and/or gender identity harm the health of our patients.”

From Shari Erickson, ACP chief advocacy officer and senior vice president of governmental affairs and public policy: “We're reaffirming our commitment to equity, compassion, inclusion and justice as our core values” and “Equity is such an integral part of our policies and principles that we needed to reaffirm our positions”.

It has been difficult to watch many of the actions being taken at a federal level. As such, it seems particularly important to hold fast to our principles, and to do what we can to watch out for each other.

Please take a look at this month's Vermont DEIB column about advocacy!

With gratitude,

Priscilla Carr MD, FACP

DEIB Corner

ACP Vermont DEIB Corner: Advocacy

In the ACP Vermont Newsletter, we hold space in each newsletter to learn about a variety of aspects of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging which can influence patients' health, community health, and personal development as well. In this winter's newsletter, we focus on equity as it pertains to physician advocacy, specifically the ways in which we can influence public policy for the goal of improving health.

advocacy

ACP engages in advocacy through the political process, through opportunities such as Leadership Day, the ACP Policy Library, working to pass state and federal legislation, making recommendations for practitioners, and more. There are a variety of ways to get involved.

First, attend Leadership Day – this is ACP's national advocacy event in April in Washington, DC. This is a day where you can learn more about ACP's advocacy priorities and advocate directly with Congress by having the opportunity to meet with your state's legislators or staff. Reach out to our chapter leadership if you are interested in learning more, with registration information available here

advocacy

Next, the ACP Legislative Action Center is a central hub where ACP sends out action alerts, helps engage members in particular health policy issues, and help connect members with their legislators. Currently, the focus is on protecting Medicaid, as there are a variety of proposals being put forth in Congress that may lead to cuts or changes in the Medicaid program. This may mean that children, patients with disabilities, or others may lose their health coverage. The ACP Legislative Action Center offers a place for you to share your perspective with your members of Congress, using the link above.

The ACP Advocate Newsletter is a place to explore ACP's actions related to federal and state health policy, as well as “action alerts” that physicians can use to take action.

Want to learn more about what ACP advocacy achieved in 2024? Check out ACP's 2024 Advocacy in Action page here
