Happy Summer my fellow Hoosiers,

As we step into the Summer, it's time again to reflect on our journey, celebrate our resilience, and advocate for the betterment of our profession and patient care.

In the relentless pursuit of healthcare excellence, it's crucial to once again (and still) remember that our well-being is the cornerstone of patient care. As you all go through your busy days and weeks, please always take a moment to pause and build your own awareness muscle, in recognizing how full your own cup is, as we all know we cannot pour from an empty cup. Nurture ways to fill this 'cup', through self-care as we strive to show up fully for all around us. Lean on others, or seek help for yourselves, when our own methods seem insufficient.

Advocacy Update

Our advocacy efforts continue to make strides in improving healthcare policies. This quarter, we've seen progress in legislation aimed at reducing administrative burdens, allowing us more time with our patients. We urge each of you to remain engaged with these efforts – reach out to your representatives, vote on the resolutions that are sent out periodically, and make your voices heard.

Our state chapter had a delegation represent our state at Capitol Hill, in Mid-May, led by our very own Advocacy Chair, Dr. Kat Palmisano as well as past Governor Dr. Brad Allen. We had students, residents, and practicing physicians, talking to State representatives about prior authorizations, Medicare reimbursements and other key burning issues.

Here is an update from the IN Advocacy Chair, Dr Palmisano:

This May, I attended the National ACP Leadership Day alongside the largest ACP Indiana Chapter faction that I have seen, eight of us total, all in different places in our career, all working together to advocate for our profession and for our patients. The National ACP put on another excellent two day event, the first day focused on how we as physicians experts can use our voice to advocate for important policy that directly impacts us as Internal Medicine physicians and our patients. The content was updated this year with special breakout rooms to help new attendees and seasoned veterans alike learn something (or many somethings) new and we used those new somethings when we attended meetings on the Hill with our Indiana representatives and senators. This year, we focused our advocacy on supporting the Safe Step Act, the Resident Physician Shortage Reduction Act, and the Physician Fee Schedule Update and Improvements Act. There was certainly an increased bipartisan interest in healthcare policy this year which made our presence feel even more important. Hopefully this year we will see some movement on these important issues facing our specialty.

Advocacy doesn't have to be a trip to DC, though we would love you to consider joining us next spring (April 28-29th) in DC for National ACP Leadership Day. You can make a difference at home and the ACP makes it easy to get started:

  • Sign up for alerts through Voter Voice (https://www.votervoice.net/ACPONLINE/home) and quickly send messages to your Congresspeople when new action items arise.
  • National ACP has also partnered with Vot-ER to help us help our patients get registered to vote and you can sign up at https://vot-er.org to get a badge with a QR code to wear with your ID to easily help patients register or get paperwork sent to their address to register to vote.
  • Consider contributing to the National ACP Political Action Committee to further help support healthcare legislation that will directly impact our specialty and our patients (https://acpservicespac.org)

I hope you all vote in the upcoming elections and send notes regularly to your representatives both nationally and at the state level. Have a great summer and hope to see you all soon!

Katherine Palmisano, MD, FACP, FAPWH
