Thomas E. Bleasdale Jr., MD, FACP, ACP Governor, Illinois Northern
As we enter into this Spring season, I'm reminded of the renewal that is that is evident all around us. It's easy to miss in the busy lives we live if we don't take a moment to stop and reflect. This Spring in particular has a feel to it that should serve to remind us where we have all been in the last few years and where we are headed. Perhaps it's a feeling that we are in a time where we can use the statement "post-pandemic" and feel as if there is some truth and hope in those words.
Reflecting on these last few years, however, we've all seen the landscape in which we deliver care undergo changes that have influenced every facet of how we practice, from the rise of telehealth to the recent and rapid influx of AI into the systems we are tasked with delivering care to our patients. It has left many of us feeling like we are simply along for the ride. Our relationships with our patients have been impacted as we have less time to nourish real relationships due to increasing administrative burden, diminishing scope of practice, metrics over mindfulness. We have found ourselves in a blurry space between quality-driven population health where we spend more time entering data than with direct patient care on one side and the continuing drive of volume-based care and increased patient access on the other. What can we do?
The answer to these dilemmas can seem perplexing but I do believe they can't be addressed without strong Physician advocacy. Whether we work in academics or in private or group practice, there is a growing grassroots movement that is more focused on Physician Wellbeing, fair practice models, and reduction of administrative burden allowing for physicians to regain autonomy and improve practice satisfaction, to have a seat at the table, to have a voice. I'm proud to say that ACP is leading the way with these efforts, and we will continue to listen to our members, their needs and concerns to push for physician advocacy across Northern Illinois. It has to be done by Internists, for Internists.
In this post-pandemic Spring, I'm hopeful. I look forward to meeting with many of you throughout my four years as Governor and hopefully take the time stop and remind myself and others where we've been and where we have the opportunities to go.
