What inspired you to choose internal medicine?

I was inspired to choose internal medicine because it allows me to serve as the "quarterback" for my patients' care. This specialty enables me to oversee and coordinate care throughout the continuum, both in inpatient and outpatient settings. I enjoy the complexity of internal medicine, where I can diagnose and manage a wide range of conditions while ensuring that care is seamless across various healthcare environments. The ability to guide patients through every stage of their health journey is what solidified my decision to pursue internal medicine.

Describe your internal medicine journey and how it has shaped your career.

My journey in internal medicine has provided me with a broad perspective on how care is delivered in both inpatient and outpatient settings. I have learned firsthand the crucial role internal medicine physicians play in coordinating and delivering high-quality, patient-centered care. This journey has also deepened my understanding of the healthcare system, and it has enabled me to take on leadership roles that focus on improving patient outcomes, efficiency, and care coordination. By seeing the bigger picture in healthcare delivery, I have been able to contribute to solutions that benefit both patients and healthcare organizations.

How has internal medicine training given you the skills, insight, and/or experience needed to become a leader?

Internal medicine training has provided me with a broad range of practice that has helped me gain perspective on healthcare challenges and solutions. The critical thinking required to treat patients has proven invaluable in solving complex problems, both in the inpatient and outpatient settings. This comprehensive approach to patient care has translated into leadership skills, allowing me to navigate and address issues in healthcare delivery. My experiences in internal medicine have honed my ability to think strategically, collaborate effectively, and drive meaningful changes in patient care and healthcare management.

What advice would you share with medical students or trainees that are interested in a leadership role?

I would encourage medical students and trainees to actively pursue leadership opportunities. It is vital for clinicians to have a voice in shaping the future of healthcare. The physician perspective is essential in solving the challenges we face today and ensuring that care is delivered in the most effective way. Don’t shy away from taking on leadership roles, whether on committees or through advocacy—our insights can play a pivotal role in the evolution of healthcare systems and patient care models.

What are your interests and hobbies outside of medicine and how do you balance your work and personal life? Anything you have learned along the way to pass on?

Outside of medicine, I enjoy spending time with my family—my wife, kids, siblings, and cousins are a big part of my life. I also enjoy staying active through sports and love to travel whenever I get the chance. Balancing work and personal life is a constant effort, but I’ve learned that setting boundaries and prioritizing time for the things and people that matter most helps prevent burnout. It’s essential to find joy and relaxation outside of your professional role to maintain long-term fulfillment in both personal and professional spheres.
