Indiana ACP Chapter Meeting - November 14-15th

The Annual Chapter Meeting will be hosted on Nov. 14-15th (Fri, Sat) at the Adams Mark Hotel. This year, our keynote speaker will be Judith Monroe, MD, FAAFP, State Health Commissioner. A wide variety of interesting sessions will be offered this year ranging from Medical Writing and an Update in Primary Care Medicine to Vitamin D + Calcium and a Diabetes Update. Additionally, we will be offering the Cardiology 2008 Update and GI 2008 Update SEP modules (there is an additional fee).

It'll be a great (!) and educational time. 13.00 CME credits will be offered. Register at http://cme.medicine.iu.edu/iucme/carteBlanche/scripts/prodView.asp?id=31285

October Journal Club

The Internal Medicine Student Interest Group (IMSIG) would like to invite all Chapter Members to its monthly Journal Club meeting:

WHEN: Wednesday, October 15, 6:30-7:30 pm
WHERE: Henry's on East (coffee bistro, 627 East St. in Downtown Indy, just south of the intersection of East and St. Clair)
WHAT: C. Daniel Johnson, et al. "Accuracy of CT Colonography for Detection of Large Adenomas and Cancers". NEJM 2008; 359:1207-1217.

New Medicaid Prescription Requirement - starts October 1st

As of October 1, 2008, all fee-for-service Medicaid prescriptions that are either hand-written or printed from an Electronic Medical Records (EMR)/ePrescribing application must contain at least one feature from each of the following three categories of tamper-resistance for a total of three features.

  • One or more industry recognized features designed to prevent unauthorized copying of a completed or blank prescription.
  • One or more industry recognized features designed to prevent the erasure or modification of information written on the prescription by the prescriber.
  • One or more industry recognized features designed to prevent the use of counterfeit prescription.

MOST IMPORTANT-As a Medicaid regulation, states have considerable leeway regarding how these rules are interpreted and implemented. Thus, the College recommends that physicians abide by information received from the office of their State Medicaid Director or contact that office directly. A contact list for assistance regarding compliance with the temper-proof prescription regulations for each state is available at:http://www.nasmd.org/issues/docs/StateContactsTRPP0408.pdf

Westside Health Fair

The Indiana University School of Medicine Internal Medicine Student Interest Group will host its 11th annual Westside Family Health Fair on October 18th. The free health fair will be held at Westside Community Health Center from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Organized and run by IU medical students, the health fair provides free health screenings, health education, and immunizations to the Westside Community. Specifically, community participants will have access to blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, vision, dental, and STD screenings. Education and information will focus on nutrition, exercise, women's health, mental health, domestic violence, and much more! Additionally, a town hall meeting and panel discussion featuring Dr. Lisa Harris, Dr. Betty Routledge, and Mr. Mike Gutwein will be conducted to address the theme from National Primary Care Week, "The Future of Primary Care in America". All members of the health care community are invited to participate and welcome to attend. Certainly, donations in the form of supplies, raffle prizes, and/or educational materials would be greatly appreciated.

Leadership Day - May 19-20th

Physicians are the best advocates for patients and the medical profession. Want to gain some advocacy skills? ACP will be hosting its annual Leadership Day meeting on May 19-20th in Washington, D.C. Learn about the key issues of the day and get an opportunity to visit Capitol Hill to put those skills into action. The Chapter does plan to offer a stipend to defray the cost of attendance. Let us know if you are interested...more details to come.

If you have issues of concern, please contact your local Council member or reply back to this email message. We always welcome any ideas or input and look forward to serving our many members.
